11 CFD Modelling

Due to the lack of suitable published guidance the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics

(CFD) in design of suitable ventilation systems serving loading bays or coach parks, the

Smoke Control Association has published a comprehensive guide related to this subject

for designers and regulators.

The guide should be of use to the designer in producing and running the CFD model and

in writing the CFD report.

It also provides recommendations on the information to be provided to the approving

authority within the designer’s package of supporting information when submitting the

CFD analysis for information and/or approval of design intent.

The Smoke Control Association is primarily concerned with ventilation design for the

removal of smoke and heat as discussed in the British Standard, but, recognising the dual

use of systems, this document provides guidance on usage for both smoke and heat

removal and vehicle emission ventilation.
